Remember the bread lion? Silly question, of course you do. It was a lion made out of bread.

Contestant Paul, who looked rather a lot like his namesake Paul Hollywood, was told it was one of the “best things” they’d ever seen made out of the crusty stuff.

In fact, Hollywood – well-known for his skills with a loaf – said even he wouldn’t have attempted it.

To this day it remains baffling that Paul didn’t win Star Baker or subsequently upturn the tent in valid protest. OK, so he got a ‘special commendation’, but it’s not quite the same is it?

I mean, even the claws are edible for goodness sake.

But it’s OK, we’re over it. Totally. Completely.

Sort of.

Anyway, it lies with this year’s crop of bakers to do better. And if they don’t, perhaps Paul can just pop back with the lion and try again for the top prize. We imagine it resides to this day in an airtight glass display case. I mean, surely you’d never eat something that beautiful…?
