Kal Nazir's family is to be expanded this summer thanks to the arrival of his wayward daughter Alya (played by newcomer Sair Khan). Her arrival will coincide with Alya's on-screen brother and grandmother, who are yet to be cast.
Leeds-born Khan, 26, said today of her signing: "I'm absolutely thrilled to be joining the cast of Coronation Street. As a northerner, I've grown up watching the show and so can't quite believe that I'll soon be walking on the famous cobbles."
Assistant producer Ella Kelly added: "We're delighted to introduce Sair as Alya, the new strong-minded member of the Nazir family, who puts temptation in the path of one male resident, causing a storm before her feet have even hit the cobbles."
University graduate Alya is set to make life difficult for dad Kal (Jimi Mistry) when she arrive in June with show bosses promising that she "will immediately ruffle a few feathers with her outspoken nature and bubbly personality".
Producer Stuart Blackburn announced back in January that the family of personal trainer Kal would soon be introduced to the soap: "We've already established that Kal's son and daughter both live with Kal's mum and dad, so we're going to bring them onto the Street. It'll be the first Muslim family that Corrie has ever had."
Kal's dad Sharif (played by former Emmerdale actor Marc Anwar) made his debut in February when viewers saw him lend money to his son in order to fund the gym that Kal and Dev have opened on Victoria Street.
