ITV's newest Saturday night entertainment show Splash! is set to return for a second run in 2014.
The first series of the show, which sees swimming costume-clad celebrities throw themselves off a diving board on live TV, had been met with a less than positive reception from critics - our own Alison Graham said: "Even Tom Daley, a sexy pixie whose every appearance launches a fusillade of oestrogen-fuelled outbursts from a poolside audience of women, cannot light the darkness that is Splash!" But Tom Daley's speedos must have been enough for some viewers, as, in spite of negative reviews (here's another one), Splash!'s first series has become ITV's highest rating new entertainment series in the last five years.
Olympic medalist Daley, who will be returning to the prime-time competition, said: "I am over the moon to hear Splash! will run for a second season... Splash! has put diving on primetime TV and diving clubs all across the country have kept telling me that they now have waiting lists, following the popularity of the show. That in itself is an incredible achievement and I'm very excited to be part of it."
While ITV's Director of Entertainment and Comedy said: "We're looking forward to even more Saturday night spectacle, and sparkle, with the second series."
The first series of Splash! finished last Saturday and saw Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards walk away victorious, beating skimpily costumed Linda Barker and Benedorm's Jake Canuso. A peak audience of 6.6 million viewers tuned in to watch the final three dive.
The new series of Splash! will air in 2014.
