Fantasy fans can get a pretty comprehensive look at the first of Peter Jackson's trilogy of films based on JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit in this new trailer.

Promising just as epic an adventure as Jackson's Lord of the Rings films, the trailer re-introduces us to Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf and Gollum, and gives us our first glimpses of the company of dwarves with whom Bilbo becomes entwined.

Packed with breath-taking scenery, astonishing visual effects and some outrageous facial hair, the new teaser suggests that The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be a real treat for cinemagoers when it is released later this year:

Martin Freeman stars in the film as Bilbo Baggins and heads up a stellar cast including Sir Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Elijah Wood, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom and Benedict Cumberbatch.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released in cinemas on Friday 14 December
