Simon Cowell will narrowly avoid a clash with the Daleks next Saturday as maneuvering in the schedules sees The X Factor kick off on ITV1 just as the first episode of the new series of Doctor Who ends over on BBC1.

Doctor Who series seven opener Asylum of the Daleks will start at 7:20pm on BBC1 on Saturday 1 September, ending at 8:10pm just as The X Factor begins on ITV1.

Earlier iterations of the schedules had seen a ten minute cross-over between the shows, with Doctor Who running until 8:10pm, while The X Factor started at it's usual time of 8pm. But ITV bosses clearly decided that going up against Doctor Who and the Daleks, in the sci-fi show's first episode since Christmas 2011, would be a bad move.

Five episodes of the new series of Doctor Who will be shown this year, culminating in the departure of Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill - aka companions Amy Pond and Rory Williams - before new sidekick Jenna-Louise Coleman joins the Time Lord in the Christmas episode. Series seven will conclude next year with a further eight episodes but the 50th anniversary of the show is likely to see plenty more Doctor Who adventures emerging during 2013.
