The Real Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines: A Wonderland Film

Radio Times

The world of microlight flying is strange . It may give you an exhilarating feeling of freedom, but you trust your life to something resembling a deckchair with a lawn-mower engine. Charlie Russell’s Wonderland film follows self-confessed propellerheads as they bounce, buzz and swear their way through a round-Britain rally.

It’s an absorbing snapshot of some of the characters who like to scoot about our skies, from young Mikey, who’s shaking with fear, to Richard, a true British eccentric, who’s cheerily calm and has already flown to Australia in his flimsy machine.

About this programme

Following three teams as they take part in the Round Britain Rally, an amateur microlighting contest in which participants fly around as much of its coastline as possible. The pilots risk their lives as they take on the ultimate test, sleeping under the wing of their light aircraft and doing their best to keep the machines in one piece.
