It’s safe to say that last time we saw Charles Dance’s character Tywin in Game of Thrones, he was looking a bit peaky. Shot (via crossbow) by his own son on the toilet, it was an ignominious end for the Lannister patriarch.
Or was it? Because in a recent interview, Dance suggested that Tywin might not be quite as removed from the Game as it would appear.
“I’m not completely missing out on the next series,” the actor told MTV. “More than that I’m not going to say.”
He added: “You haven’t seen the last of Tywin Lannister.”
So what could he mean? Well, it’s not entirely unlike the TV series to divulge from the plot of the George RR Martin novels it’s based on, but keeping Tywin alive would be a huge game-changer.
That said, it’s recently been suggested that some characters could sit out the whole of next season, so the programme-makers aren’t averse to a bit of creative reorganising.
The most obvious reason Tywin would still be around is for flashbacks, but as of yet Game of Thrones has avoided that technique. On the other hand, there have been rumours that the no-flashbacks rule might be changing as one twitter user posted in May that her daughter had been cast as a young version of Cersei Lannister (played by Lena Headey in the series). If that rumour is true, is Dance back for those scenes?
Perhaps Dance is just referring to coming back to do a bit of ‘corpse work’ at his character’s funeral (he’d still out-act everyone onscreen) – or maybe he’ll rise from the dead as one of the White Walkers’ zombie slaves. Who knows?
One thing’s for sure – it sounds like HBO have some very intriguing plans for the next series.
