Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller (soon to appear in Elementary, a modern-day US take on the great detective) collected a joint best actor prize for their dual roles as Victor Frankenstein and his monstrous creation in director Danny Boyle’s stage version of Mary Shelley’s Gothic horror classic.

Meanwhile, family musical Matilda, adapted from the children’s book by Roald Dahl, broke an Olivier Awards record by winning seven awards, including best actress in a musical. The award was shared between the show’s four “Matildas”, Cleo Demetriou, Kerry Ingram, Sophia Kiely and Eleanor Worthington-Cox, who at ten years old become the youngest ever Olivier Award winner.

The production also scooped best new musical, best actor in a musical for Bertie Carvel, best director for Matthew Warchus, plus choreography, set design and sound design awards.

Ruth Wilson was named best actress for her turn as a former prostitute in Anna Christie, while Sheridan Smith collected the best performance in a supporting role award for her part in Terence Rattigan’s Flare Path.
