Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Great white sharks may not be the lean, mean killing machines of movie myth. Nor in real life do they have a special taste for skimpily clad bathers. But those liberties with the truth don't stop us lapping up the occasional, daftly entertaining shark-fest like this. Mandy Moore and Claire Holt play tourist divers who become seabed shark-bait when their viewing cage gets detached from its surface vessel. Their air is running out, and the fearsome predators are circling. While treading no new water, 47 Metres Down is as efficient as the constantly lurking man-eaters - claustrophobically intense, and overall a taut, fraught thrill-ride that all but committed fish-phobes will enjoy. It's also pleasingly less prurient and more female-empowered than many "women in peril" creature features. Be warned, though, its murkily chaotic style may ratchet up the tension, but it sometimes makes the action a bit tough to follow.
