Our Score
Michael Fassbender heads a stellar cast that helps to elevate director Justin Kurzel's adaptation of the same-titled video game. It is a moody, richly textured if confusing spectacle where Fassbender's DNA is the key to ending a centuries-old war between the controlling Templars and the Assassins, who are essentially freedom-loving rebels. Scientist Marion Cotillard has invented a machine that sees Fassbender regress to the time of the Spanish Inquisition to locate what both factions want: the genetic code for free will. Kurzel, who directed Fassbender and Cotillard in Macbeth (2015), successfully marries the signature touches of the blockbusting game (the "Leap of Faith" and the visually thrilling blur of past and present) with a neat origin story and fits in plenty of dynamic action. The flashbacks are tricked out with eye-popping parkour stunts and the bleak finale is marked by a swirl of death, destruction and destiny that seems to anticipate a sequel. Both the ardent fanbase and casual observer are well catered for.

After being sentenced to death, murder suspect Callum Lynch enters a virtual world in the search for a device that contains genetic code for free will. Video game adaptation, starring Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson.
