Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Michael Fassbender and a stellar cast help elevate director Justin Kurzel's moody video-game adaptation. It's a richly textured if confusing spectacle in which Fassbender's DNA is the key to ending a centuries-old war between the controlling Templars and freedom-loving rebels, the Assassins. Using a machine developed by scientist Marion Cotillard, Fassbender regresses to the time of the Spanish Inquisition to locate what both rival factions want: the genetic code for free will.Kurzel, who directed Fassbender and Cotillard in Macbeth (2015), successfully marries the signature touches of the blockbusting game (the "Leap of Faith" and the visually thrilling blur of past and present) with a neat origin story. Boasting plenty of dynamic action and eye-popping parkour stunts, this caters for both the game's ardent fanbase and the casual observer alike.
