Our Score
Michael Fassbender and a stellar cast help elevate director Justin Kurzel's moody video-game adaptation. It's a richly textured if confusing spectacle in which Fassbender's DNA is the key to ending a centuries-old war between the controlling Templars and freedom-loving rebels, the Assassins. Scientist Marion Cotillard has invented a machine that sees Fassbender regress to the time of the Spanish Inquisition to locate what both factions want: the genetic code for free will. Kurzel, who directed Fassbender and Cotillard in Macbeth (2015), successfully marries the signature touches of the blockbusting game (the "Leap of Faith" and the visually thrilling blur of past and present) with a neat origin story. Boasting plenty of dynamic action and eye-popping parkour stunts, this caters for both the game's ardent fanbase and the casual observer alike.

Summary

A convict facing execution is recruited for a secret experiment where his consciousness is sent back in time to experience the life of his ancestor - a 15th-century ancestor battling a secret society. With the same evil organisation plotting world domination in the present, he must master his predecessor's skills and unlock his secret knowledge to defeat them. Action adventure based on the video game series, starring Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson.
