They've been through a lot. Murder trials, prison spells, secrets, scandal, sabotage... And most recently Anna's brutal attack at the hands of visiting valet Green.
But Joanne Froggatt, the actress who plays the meek lady's maid, is certain that Anna and her beloved Mr Bates can make it through whatever tests are thrown their way.
"Anna and Bates' love can survive anything," said the 33-year-old on this Saturday's The Jonathan Ross Show. A statement which will please Downton fans worried that the marriage between the servants' golden couple is on the rocks...
Of the contraversial scene from episode three, which saw Anna become the victim of rape, Froggatt said: "I never thought it was going too far. I was surprised when I heard about the storyline, but I was really pleased because it's a really important issue the show is tackling.
"It’s important to remember that for a girl, especially a working class girl in service, like the character Anna is, these things did happen and happened quite a lot. When something is dramatized it provokes a much more emotive response than just hearing a story on the news," she continued.
The Jonathan Ross Show is on Saturday at 9:50pm on ITV
