Transgender Kids: Who Knows Best?

Summary

Around the world there has been a huge increase in the number of children being referred to gender clinics - boys saying they want to be girls, and vice versa - while their parents are encouraged to fully support their change of identity. But is this the right approach? This World hears from Dr Kenneth Zucker, one of the world's leading experts in childhood gender dysphoria, who lost his job for challenging the belief that children know best. The film also asks whether children with gender dysphoria could overcome their feelings without transitioning.

Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

This careful, thought-provoking film tiptoes into the delicate subject of transgender children (there was a recent Channel 4 series and a memorable Louis Theroux film, so film-maker John Conroy is not alone). Dr Kenneth Zucker, a world expert on “gender dysphoria” in children, where a child is unhappy with their biological sex, lost his job after linking children’s insistence on wanting to change their genders with mental health issues.

Zucker was denounced by transgender-affirmative activists though received the backing of his patients and colleagues. He advises caution about very young children being allowed to set out on the trans path, and says here, “A four-year-old might say he wants to be a dog. But do you go out and buy him dog food?”
