The Great British Sewing Bee

Series 6 - Episode 5

The handful of viewers who have complained about Joe Lycett’s sauciness had better mute tonight’s show because the theme is sleepwear and lingerie. “Now, just because we are dealing with underwear, it doesn’t mean we can be silly,” he says, though, inevitably, there’s a smattering of smut. The first challenge is to make a boned basque so there’s a fair bit of muttering-under-the breath from the sewers, too, because that’s a real stinker of a garment to make.
It’s just as well that the contestants can’t hear the comments of Esme Young and Patrick Grant as they observe them from on high while they attempt to make sleep sets. “He’s not done a fitting yet, which is a risk,” whispers Patrick about one person. “I’m not sure about that side panel, it could be a problem,” says Esme about someone’s fabric choice. With the stitchers zipping up and down the leader board quicker than the needle on a sewing machine, it’s anyone’s guess who’ll be sent home.

The amateur sewer competition hosted by Joe Lycett continues. This time, the eight remaining contestants take part in a series of challenges as they return to the sewing room for lingerie and sleepwear week. To test the sewers' handling skills, judges Patrick Grant and Esme Young kick off the pattern challenge with a boned basque. The task requires sewing together small pattern pieces for a precise fit and creating a tricky hook and eye fastening. Next, in the transformation challenge, the sewers transform pyjamas and nightwear into a summer dress, before finally being tasked to create a two-piece female sleep set which has to incorporates lace somewhere in their design.
