GTA 6 Online might have up to 96 players. That is, if a former editor of the French fansite Rockstar Mag is to be believed.

While many of us are excited to get our hands on Grand Theft Auto 6 to play through its single-player story mode, in the years that follow from release, it’s going to be the new incarnation of GTA Online that will keep chugging on, and it could be a great deal busier.

Currently, GTA Online is limited to 32 players in a server, officially at least, with some modded servers having seen over 2,000 players causing mayhem in San Andreas. That’s apocalyptic levels of griefing.

But as for GTA 6, we might indeed see that player count get bumped up to 96 players, and the team developing the online component is said to have 64 players up and running already. All this speculation comes from Fravilys, who posted the rumours on Medium.

According to Fravillys, they have the intel on good authority from an insider who has supposed first-hand knowledge of the project, codenamed GTA6MP – how imaginative.

As part of the game, Rockstar is supposedly looking to improve players’ experience too, with measures that will hopefully result in “significantly reduced latency”.

Not only that, but they are said to be working on a feature dubbed “Fluid Access,” which is said to have been “specifically designed to eliminate the feeling of compartmentalisation between different sessions, ensuring a multiplayer experience without interruption” and this would enable the “ability to perform free-roam multiplayer activities with players from different sessions, without ever having to leave your own environment or experience loading times”.

So what does this mean? This sounds a lot like server-meshing, a technology featured in Star Citizen that will allow for multiple servers to connect to one another and operate as if they were one, meaning that objects and players can travel through the environment seamlessly without ever being aware they are connecting to another instance.

This reduces the load on any one given server. Furthermore, server meshing tech is working towards being fully dynamic and being deployed where needed.

Say for instance, lots of players want to get up to vehicular hijinx in Port Gellhorn, the physical size of these individual servers could shrink down in terms of world coverage so that there are enough servers to accommodate lots of players, whereas large swatches of the countryside might only need one server as less players may be there.

Think of it as spreading the server infrastructure love so that we don’t all rubberband around the map if too many of us descend upon any one part of the map.

As always, though with any sort of GTA rumour, take this with a fistful of salt, but seeing as we are talking about very real technologies currently being developed and shown off by another developer in conjunction with Rockstar’s technical chops and treasure chest, it’s not out of the realm of reality.
