Sheridan Smith returned to Funny Girl on the West End last night

The actress reprised the role of Fanny Brice, much to the surprise and delight of fans

London theatre fans were treated to a special Friday night at The Savoy as Sheridan Smith made her return to Funny Girl.

The actress had taken a two month leave of absence from the show, suffering with exhaustion, leaving ticket holders disappointed that they wouldn’t get to see her in action.

But there was no disappointment in the stalls – at least if Twitter is anything to go by – when Smith took to the stage once again.

In fact, the audience had no idea they’d be seeing the original leading lady.

The Funny Girl team released a statement yesterday announcing Smith’s return to the role for evening performances across the weekend.

“We are delighted to welcome Sheridan Smith back to Funny Girl this evening (July 8th)” it began, before detailing which shows Smith and her understudy, Natasha Barnes, will take the leading role in from here on in.
