EastEnders has solved its latest paternity riddle with tonight’s episode of the BBC1 soap revealing that Kush Kazemi (Davood Ghadami) is the father of Stacey Branning’s (Lacey Turner) unborn baby.
Earlier in the week, viewers saw Shabnam work out that Martin wasn’t the dad – and this evening’s events saw Kush reach the conclusion that his and Stacey’s past fling had resulted in her pregnancy.
Shabnam currently remains unaware of the bombshell, with Kush going so far as to marry her despite only just learning that Stacey is expecting his child.
Scenes just broadcast saw Stacey tell Kush that it was “just DNA” and that Martin is going to be the baby’s dad, adding, “You’d made your choice. You chose Shabnam. I wasn’t going to use it to change your mind”.
Stacey was then seen insisting that she’d moved on, but will Kush be able to forget about what has happened? “I can’t just walk away here,” he said later, before opting – at the last minute – not to tell Shabs the truth.
But secrets do have a habit of coming out in soapland. And speaking to RadioTimes.com about how Shabnam would feel should she discover that her husband is the dad, actress Rakhee Thakrar said:
“It would be interesting to see how she reacts. I have a feeling it won’t be in the way you’d expect. Since her baby, Zaair, died, Shabnam’s world has changed in terms of what’s important.
“I don’t think you can get much worse than your baby dying. If that hadn’t happened, then Kush being the dad would feel like the worst thing in her life. Now, her hierarchy of pain is different.”
