Ang Lee's epic love story about two cowboys is so much more than just a "gay" western; it's an exquisitely made and moving account of the corrosive nature of suppressed love. Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger are superb as the two men who, in the 1960s, find employment minding sheep on the slopes of the titular mountain. They fall for each other, at first just physically (their sex scenes are far from explicit and would be deemed coy if the couplings were heterosexual), but then much more deeply. Later, after both marry to satisfy convention, they resume their impossible affair via "fishing trips" during which few fish are actually caught. Lee avoids any proselytising or preaching, leaving the agony of the situation to speak for itself. And with its final, wrenching sequence, the film delivers what might be the nearest thing to an anguished sob yet committed to celluloid.

A doomed love affair between two Wyoming cowboys develops over the course of 20 years. The relationship begins when they are hired to herd sheep on a remote mountain in the 1960s, and though they go their separate ways and try to settle down to married life, they are unable to overcome their desire for each other and continue to meet in secret. Ang Lee's drama, starring Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway.
