Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Master of audacity Sacha Baron Cohen returns with a sequel to the original 2006 Borat movie, and it is mostly a rerun of previous gags, right down to the "mankini". This time, instead of embarking on a quest to find Pamela Anderson, the gormless Kazakh TV journalist is in America to gift Vice President Mike Pence with Johnny the Monkey - the country's "Minister of Culture and number one porno star". En route, Borat talks (again) to real-life Americans, who (again) come across as vastly likeable and accommodating, smiling gamely as Borat's requests become ever-more shocking. The focus on "McDonald" Trump's administration, and the arrival of Covid-19 halfway through shooting, will date this outing a lot faster than the original film, but there are some outrageously funny set pieces, plus a brilliantly versatile turn by Bulgarian actor Maria Bakalova as Borat's needy daughter. As for the jokes about Kazakhstan - the country complained that the first movie was "incompatible with the ethics and civilised behaviour of Kazakhstan's people" - Baron Cohen has responded by simply doubling down.
