21 Bridges

A cop-killing bloodbath in Brooklyn lights the fuse for a lockdown of the island of Manhattan in this pacey thriller. Leading the manhunt for the perpetrators (played by Taylor Kitsch and Stephan James) is detective Andre Davis (Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman), a righteous avenger with a "shoot first, ask questions later" reputation, who calls for an unprecedented blockade of all bridges "to flood the island with blue" and prevent the killers from skipping town. A familiar cops-and-robbers scenario, then. Not quite, because there's more going on than meets the eye, as the no-nonsense Davis and temporary sidekick Frankie Burns (a convincing Sienna Miller) start to find inconsistencies in the case while the clock counts down. There's nothing genre-shaking here, but the film (co-produced by Boseman and Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo)doesn't outstay its welcome, the shoot-outs and street chases are suitably kinetic, and it's buoyed by a magnetic performance from Boseman.
