Alligators are the new sharks in this lean, mean creature feature from director Alexandre Aja (Piranha) and ace genre producer Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead). Ignoring hurricane evacuation orders, competitive swimmer Haley Keller (Kaya Scodelario) searches for her father (Barry Pepper) and finds him injured in the basement of their Florida family home. However, the local alligator farm has spilled its residents into the rising floodwaters, and the reptiles are hungry with hatchlings to protect. The film is loaded with crafty, fun scares and walks a taut tightrope between riotous suspense and stark horror imagery. Aja's eye for gruesome detail and cunning direction lends real distinction to this skilful shocker, which is earnest enough to be taken seriously and smart enough to milk inherent nervous laughter. Looters and would-be rescuers ensure the body count is kept buoyant with knockout 'gator attacks while the game cast energetically sink their teeth into the pacey, punchy concept.
