Army of the Dead

Zack Snyder ups the stakes on his excellent Dawn of the Dead remake with this belated sequel, a zombie heist movie set in a besieged Las Vegas. Ahead of a nuclear strike intended to wipe out the undead, ex-mercenary Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) is sent in to steal $200m from a casino vault. His tooled-up crew includes pilot Tig Notaro, safecracker Matthias Schweighöfer, and his estranged daughter Ella Purnell. However, after a showstopping credits sequence, in which a new strain of infected marauders tears through town to the tune of Viva Las Vegas, things go rapidly downhill. Once the characters are inside, the biggest dangers are the cruddy dialogue, cheap-looking sets and CG silliness, such as a cameo appearance from Siegfried and Roy's zombie tiger. Never one for restraint, Snyder gives his trademark maximalism full rein, delivering a bloated 147-minute movie that favours empty spectacle over humanity.
