Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

In an absorbing if languid post-apocalypse drama, Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage faces up to a world decimated by some kind of pandemic with phlegmatic acceptance and a daily routine. He lives in a library and his days consist of scavenging for essentials (food, batteries, petrol) and methodically clearing his home town of the desiccated dead. That is until Elle Fanning's Grace crashes into his well-ordered fortress of solitude. As his aversion to her chaotic presence thaws, a variation on Robinson Crusoe and Friday gently develops until an upending sci-fi twist changes that dynamic. It's beautifully shot by cinematographer/director Reed Morano (an Emmy winner for TV hit The Handmaid's Tale) and there's a richly atmospheric score from Adam Taylor (with the odd head-banging intervention from Canadian rockers Rush). Sometimes the film feels a little too enigmatic for its own good, but there's compensation in committed performances from Fanning and the always charismatic Dinklage.
