Matriarch

After crashing their car, a heavily pregnant woman and her husband take refuge in the Scottish countryside farmhouse of a sinister family in this low-key and derivative thriller. Rachel Hopkins and Scott Vickers (who also directs and co-wrote the screenplay) soon find all is not what it seems as the family's matriarch (Julie Hannan) and her misfit adopted adult sons take a worryingly intense interest in the impending birth of their visitors' child. All the elements are in place for an edge-of-the-seat fright fest, but Vickers' direction is pedestrian and the script borrows heavily from The Wicker Man and Rosemary's Baby, with a side order of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Neither of the younger leads is particularly compelling, although Hannan's stary-eyed farmer's wife conveys a neat line in homespun terror.
