Our Score
In this true-story drama, Peter Dinklage plays infamous Bond actor Hervé Villechaize, who shares a night of debauchery and soul searching with a reluctant British journalist (Jamie Dornan). It's a unique story that could have spiralled into madness, but instead concentrates on the tragedy of a fallen star. Dinklage portrays Villechaize as angry and resentful at being pigeonholed by society, with Dornan his equally resentful and unwilling confidant. Their bickering slows the film down at times, making it hard to be sympathetic to either of the plights. However, Dinklage turns things around with a layered performance, particularly in the film's final act, exposing his character's aggression and flamboyance as camouflage for a man coming face-to-face with his own misdeeds. My Dinner with Hervé is not as distinct as its subject, but this alcohol-soaked dark night of the soul is compelling thanks to the commitment of its two stars.
