Striking an exact balance between Saving Private Ryan and Frankenstein's Army (2013), this super-gory Nazi-zombie horror is great fun and unrelenting throughout its violent twists and atmospheric turns. Paratroopers on a mission to destroy a German radio antenna atop a French church during the latter days of the Second World War uncover secret reanimation experiments intended to create an invincible thousand-year Reich. After an impressive and thunderously immersive plane crash, explosives expert Ford (Wyatt Russell, the equally gung-ho son of Kurt) quickly takes charge of the usual band of brothers. The macho bravado grows as the reluctant heroes storm the underground laboratory where they confront such grim sights as talking body parts and deformed human guinea pigs. Pilou Asbaek (from TV's Borgen) shines as a sadistic Nazi officer and the unstoppable disfigured villain of this sustained pacey piece, a tension-laden, lip-smackingly lurid comic-strip shocker.
