Romantic comedy about a British-Asian man who struggles to find love again following his divorce. Audio in stereo only.
About to hit 30, aspiring comedian Shahid (Danny Ashok) has a failed business behind him, but in this homegrown romantic comedy the real barrier to finding love in the Muslim community is the thorny issue of his marital status. The failure of his first marriage was hardly his fault, but he daren't tick the "divorced" box on his favoured online dating site, and even when he falls for charming single doctor Fatimah (Asmara Gabrielle), past experience has taught him to be very wary of mentioning it. A genuine real-life issue, this is also a promising set-up as the characters' future happiness is put at stake because of cultural norms, but Oz Arshad's laughter-free script and slapdash direction doesn't make the most of it. Both leads are entirely likeable, but the material is decidedly thin, whether it's dating-scene banter or Ashok's stand-up act on a Muslim-centric TV talent show. While refreshing to see the British Muslim community represented in everyday life, ultimately a comedic love story with low-wattage romance and few chuckles has limited appeal.
