Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Director Alex Taylor's feature debut is fine if you like quirky, but one to avoid if you don't as this is British film-making at its most wilfully independent and offbeat. Set largely in the fantasy worlds and private universe of the disconnected teens of the army town of Aldershot, this trippy film focuses on a girl's disappearance, apparently via alien abduction, and on attempts by her father and friends to fathom what happened to her. Spaceship boasts plenty of idiosyncratic style, and succeeds to a degree in capturing the self-absorption and self-indulgence of youth. But its mannered, florid and hippy-dippy approach, plus its seemingly random and disconnected scenes and speeches, make it a real minority watch that's best filed under "decidedly different, but definitely difficult".
