Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Fat pay cheques are luring Hollywood stars to China to boost the global appeal of home-grown films - in this case, John Cusack and Adrien Brody. They're rubbing shoulders with local superstar Jackie Chan, playing rival Romans; one protecting a consul's young son, the other seeking to kill him. Chan plays a falsely disgraced military commander seeking to restore his reputation by fortifying a Chinese city, with Cusack's help, to fend off Brody and assorted other foes. Chan brings martial artistry to the fight, Cusack his siege skills, and the the film overall is a mishmash of languages, styles and tones. Fights, for example, range from the comic to the graphic. But the Chinese have patently thrown a lot of money at Dragon Blade. It's lavish, with some genuinely spectacular moments. And there's some amusement to be derived from seeing Cusack, in particular, look like a fish out of water in such surroundings. It's a film more likely to get watched, if at all, for its curiosity value.
