Our Score
Zac Efron plays a conservative, about-to-be-wed young man who's fooled into taking his recently bereaved but hedonistic grandfather (Robert De Niro) to Florida for spring break. With drug use, nudity and lots of swearing, this comedy directed by Dan Mazer (writer of Borat and Brüno) could have been a mess of crass gags if not for the chemistry of the cast, particularly the two leads who have a rapport that wins you back even when the jokes inevitably stray over the line. Efron gamely sends up his own persona, proving the perfect straight man for De Niro, who looks like he's having a blast (though you may never get over the sight of him rapping). It's an energy that works, as the veteran actor and Jason Mantzoukas (as drug dealer Pam) both share several hilarious moments. As filthy as the title suggests, Dirty Grandpa won't go down as De Niro's finest work. However you can't fault it for being all about what it says on the tin.
