Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Michael Caine stars in this drama about an American widower living in Paris whose cycle of grief is interrupted when he meets Clémence Poésy, a young woman with whom he has an instant connection. As the pair get to know each other, many dinners, arguments and reminiscences follow. But, with little in the way of development, the mood turns maudlin and this initially interesting liaison becomes increasingly static. There are tender moments recalling Caine's lost love but they tend to make Poésy superfluous, the pair's burgeoning relationship serving only to underline what Caine had with his wife (Jane Alexander). Despite a shaky American accent, Caine is as watchable as ever and the flashbacks with him and his wife are heartbreaking at times. But, Caine's heart-rending flourish aside, this often mawkish drama struggles to make a point.
