Who could possibly do first Doctor William Hartnell justice in a biopic about the creation of Doctor Who? We weren't sure, until Mark Gatiss - Doctor Who writer and creator of upcoming BBC drama An Adventure in Time and Space - leapt up on stage and revealed it at this year's Radio Times Covers Party.

Look at David Bradley and you will see it immediately. The man who played Hogwarts caretaker Argus Filch in the Harry Potter films and, more relevantly, ruthless trader and collector Solomon in recent Doctor Who episode Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, will portray the First Doctor in Gatiss’s dramatisation of the making of Doctor Who. And he looks like the perfect choice.

Want more cast news? We have it, exclusively: Brian Cox (no, not the professor, the consumate actor; the original Hannibal Lecter) will play Sidney Newman, the producer who made Doctor Who a reality.

Sacha Dhawan, probably best known from Alan Bennett's stage play The History Boys, will star as director Waris Hussein, who helmed the first ever Doctor Who adventure An Unearthly Child, while Call the Midwife's Jessica Raine will play founding producer Verity Lambert.
