Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

On paper, this genre flick looks like an attempt to do for Kevin Costner what Taken did for Liam Neeson. Unfortunately, it doesn't have Taken's pace and energy, despite the writing presence of Luc Besson in both movies. Costner plays a veteran CIA agent diagnosed with a fatal disease who reluctantly accepts one last assignment in Paris in order to get his hands on an experimental new drug that might save his life. However, his mission is complicated by the fact that he is also trying to reconnect with his surly teenage daughter (Hailee Steinfeld), who also happens to be living in France. The performances can't be faulted, with Costner his usual charismatic self as the ageing super-spy and Amber Heard stealing the show as his kinky handler. And the action sequences have plenty of verve, but director McG interrupts them with tedious comedy sequences in which Costner gets parenting tips from an assortment of villains, plus some overly sentimental moments where he attempts to bond with his family.
