The creator of House, David Shore, acknowledges that his testy titular doctor was inspired by Sherlock Holmes. But have you picked up on the clues?
The name
The working title of the series was Chasing Zebras, Circling the Drain. But they settled on plain House - "a subtle homage", says Shore, to Sherlock Holmes (as in homes).
The inspiration
Holmes is famously modelled on a brilliant doctor and teacher, Joseph Bell, who could, says Shore, "walk into a waiting room and diagnose people without speaking to them". Just like House does.
The friend
Holmes had Dr Watson; House's best and possibly only friend is Dr Wilson.
The method
Holmes's dictum that "when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth" also sums up House's approach to medical mysteries.
The drug use
Holmes was addicted to cocaine; House is hooked on Vicodin.
The home
House lives at 221B, the number of Holmes's Baker Street address.
The catchphrase
No, we haven't heard House diagnose a tricky nutritional ailment with "Alimentary, my dear Wilson." But we live in hope.
