Farm shop worker Trish is the victim of a sexual assault at the beginning of the series. She’s only recently gone through a breakup with her estranged husband and also has a daughter to raise. The challenge of putting her life back together has barely begun – but it promises to reveal more about her, and the people she calls friends and neighbours.

Julie Hesmondhalgh is probably best known to the nation as Coronation Street’s dearly departed Hayley Cropper, a role she played for 16 years. Since leaving Corrie she’s popped up in Happy Valley, Cucumber and even Inside No. 9.

Ian Winterman – Charlie Higson

Ian left wife Trish for another woman just six months ago after she refused to give him another shot and his relationship with her and their daughter, Leah, has suffered as a result. When Trish is attacked Ian faces the challenge of navigating his new relationship and dealing with the impact the horrific assault has on his ex-wife.

The man who gave us young James Bond novels and ITV’s Jekyll & Hyde and the Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased) is no stranger to TV screens. He’s probably best remembered for his work on The Fast Show as Ralph, the landowner master of Farmer Ted, Swiss Toni or the suits your sir tailor. Higson wrote for Harry Enfield’s Television Programme in the early 1990s, and penned many of the spin-offs, including Fast Show spin-off TV movie Ted and Ralph.

Beth Latimer – Jodie Whittaker

Beth Latimer’s personal life has been anything but rosy since the tragic death of her son Danny in series one, and the subsequent breakdown of her marriage. But she’s always been determined to keep her family together and that’s exactly what she’s up to when we catch up with her in series three. She’s also found a new job, which has given her a new purpose in life – and allows her to use her own harrowing experience to help others.

Whitaker’s no stranger to TV screens, having popped up in the likes of Return to Cranford, The Assets, The Smoke and Black Mirror. She made her big screen debut in 2006 film Venus, and also appeared in the St Trinian’s films, One Day and Good Vibrations to name but a few. And she’s also due to lead the cast of new BBC1 thriller Trust Me, too.

Mark Latimer – Andrew Buchan

Mark’s still struggling to cope with Danny’s death and the court’s ruling. He doesn’t feel as though justice has been served and grapples with the idea that perhaps he could have done more for his son.  Can he learn to live in the present?
