23. Sherlock (BBC1)

Bobby Ewing may have dramatically returned from the dead via a shower in Dallas, but devilish (and actually dead) diva Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott) took things up a notch, stepping out from behind a waterfall as Sherlock visited Victorian England via his Mind Palace. The mind-bending 90-minute time-travelling caper both thrilled and chilled on New Year’s Day, and left some wondering whether modern day Baker Street was actually a figment of an opium-addled 19th-century Sherlock’s imagination. The less said about The Abominable Bride’s white hood-wearing pals the better, though. Sarah Doran
