Episode 8: Bristol

Summary

Tim Dunn goes behind the scenes at Bristol Temple Meads, a Grade 1 listed station, and is given special access to Brunel's old Tudor station and boardroom.

Review

Railway historian Tim Dunn is up on the roof of “one of my favourite railway stations of all time”, the rather lovely Bristol Temple Meads.

But the thrills are mixed as Dunn, who has a problem with heights, gets a bit giddy and kneels down, clutching the fence as his sanguine Network Rail guide looks on, bemused. Still, even vertigo can’t dampen his enthusiasm for the unforgettable view and vantage point.

Mr Great Western himself, our old friend Isambard Kingdom Brunel, is responsible for the design of most of the station, which is a mishmash of a Tudor palace exterior with a bold and flouncy Gothic façade, its four-pinnacled central clocktower.
