If there was a showbiz equivalent of Willie Wonka’s Golden Ticket, it was getting the call-up to appear with Eric and Ern.
“What a happy, happy time that was,” says a clearly moved Michele Dotrice about appearing in 1976. Her versatile turn in a Lady Chatterley spoof is proof of Dotrice’s comedy chops, but then this series has amply demonstrated the quality of the boys’ supporting artists. As well as their mischievous ability to make their guests laugh. “They knew that I was their best audience,” says Dotrice, “and I would pee myself!”
The last of Gold’s clipshows has a theme of love and relationships, and features some solid if slightly saucy laughs. But none of the scenes compares with those underlining the strength of the duo’s own rapport. One, in which they speak, and gesture, at exactly the same time, is still astonishing – and that’s not just down to thorough rehearsal.
