This really is the Mission: Impossible of natural-history series, to the extent that you expect Steve Backshall to receive his assignment via a recording that states: “This tape will self-destruct – in an ecologically sound way – in five seconds.”
Like Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt, he always assembles a crack squad of helpers, finds an opportunity to take off his shirt and dangles precariously on a rope.
This week, it’s at the entrance to an underground cave system in Mexico’s Yucatán
Peninsula. But first, he has to trek heroically through a scorpion-infested jungle carrying what appears to be the entire contents of a left-luggage office on his back. Why? Because he can.
