Episode 1: Suriname: Lost World

Summary

The naturalist ventures into uncharted territory in pursuit of new discoveries. He takes on physical challenges, encounters extraordinary wildlife and meets remarkable people. In the first edition, Steve and a team of climbers and jungle survival experts head into the ancient landscape of South America's Guiana Shield. This vast wilderness of pristine forests and towering table-top mountains is one of the most inaccessible terrains on the planet

Review

What a tremendously manly series, full of manly men doing manly things. There’s Steve Backshall abseiling down a waterfall in the remote South American jungle as tumbling deadly rocks thunder around his ears, then he strips to the waist for an arduous boat trip down a river.

His companion, former Royal Marine sniper Aldo Kane (who presumably isn’t here to shoot anyone, and last seen presenting a documentary about drones) actually breaks his thumb at one point but carries on, in agony, after saying he’ll just have to “suck it up”. Ah, they don’t make men like that any more.

It’s actually a tremendous adventure, a bit like Conan Doyle’s The Lost World, though the genial Backshall is hardly Professor Challenger. He’s great at explaining things in an engaging, straightforward way and he’s clearly as brave as heck as he and his team negotiate unexplored jungle.
