Episode 3: Operation Showtime

Summary

The ATF siege is in motion. Assault vehicles storm the Mount Carmel compound and gunfire is exchanged, which begins a 51-day standoff.

Review

Catastrophe comes to the Texas home of the Branch Davidian sect when the men from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) arrive, armed to the teeth and ready to fire. Inevitably, shooting starts and gunfire rages, with deaths on both sides. Cult leader David Koresh is badly wounded, but still musters the energy for an hour-long rambling broadcast about the Bible.

This spare and highly effective drama captures the unfolding horrors of a gun battle and its aftermath. As attitudes harden on both sides, commentators look to lay the blame firmly on the US government: “This was a military operation directed at US citizens by its own government,” declares one radio host.
