A Score to Settle

Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage has had a topsy-turvy time (with emphasis on the turvy) since his acclaimed late-career performance in The Bad Lieutenant - Port of Call in 2009. This above-average revenge thriller sees Cage's ageing Mob enforcer out to exact payback on the gangsters who left him to rot in prison for decades for a murder he didn't commit. Unlike his scenery-chewing rampaging in stylish 2018 revenge horror Mandy, Cage is in melancholy mode here, as his urge for retribution is tempered by chronic insomnia, a rapprochement with his estranged son and even a chance for love with a mystery lady. It's not the most original straight-to-small-screen effort, but it is surprisingly tender at times and that's down to Cage's classy portrayal of a mobster torn between retribution and reconciliation.
