Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

The remarkable exploits of Norwegian commando Jan Baalsrud have already been commemorated in Arne Skouen's Oscar-nominated saga, Ni Liv (1957). But Dutch director Harald Zwart brings chillingly claustrophobic immediacy to his recreation of Baalsrud's attempt to resist capture by the Gestapo following a failed 1943 maritime raid on occupied Norway. As the sole survivor of Operation Martin Red, Baalsrud became a symbol of national resistance, as he was sheltered by locals in a remote region before being smuggled into neutral Sweden. Depicted by cinematographer Geir Hartly Andreassen either as a speck on the frozen landscape or in punishing close-up, Thomas Gullestad is the epitome of heroic fortitude, as he braves Arctic conditions, isolation and meagre rations. Jonathan Rhys Meyers is suitably dogged as his German pursuer, while Zwart switches ably between the tense waiting game and the thrilling dash for freedom.
