Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

There's neither a freakishly long nose nor a swordfight, but this is still essentially Cyrano de Bergerac, albeit updated and relocated to an upper-crust English boarding school. Its Cyrano is Amberson (Alex Lawther), a nerd with a knack for poetry. He's "hired" by the school hunk, nice-but-dim Winchester (Jonah Hauer-King), to woo and hopefully win exotic Agnes (Pauline Etienne), daughter of the school's new French teacher. But Amberson fancies her too, and a "who writes what to woo" love triangle jingle-jangles into discordant existence. Old Boys isn't perfect. There's some dodgy acting, and its public-school satire lacks some subtlety. But it's also cute and fun, and its Cyrano pastiche kind of works.
