Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Set in Cairo at the beginning of 2011 with the Arab Spring on the cusp of exploding, this intriguing thriller stars Fares Fares, a familiar face from the Scandi-noir Department Q trilogy or as a lethal heavy in 2012's Safe House. The Beirut-born actor plays morally bankrupt police detective Noredin, who's assigned to investigate a vicious killing at the eponymous hotel. Seemingly a cut-and-dried case, it soon becomes apparent to Noredin that something more nefarious is afoot involving the upper echelons of Egyptian society. It is then that the usually bribable Noredin finds himself at the mercy of powerful forces (not least his previously moribund conscience) and is plunged into dangerous waters as Egypt hurtles towards revolution. It's an interesting arena for a murder mystery-cum-political thriller to take place, with Fares oozing presence as the cop in search of his soul.
