Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

At the beginning of this chilly supernatural thriller from director Joachim Trier (Louder than Bombs), a man takes his six-year-old daughter on a hunting trip. Her name is Thelma, and as she watches a deer, her father briefly aims his rifle at the back of her head. After that, the story jumps forward in time and follows Thelma (Eili Harboe) as a lonely university student. When she becomes attracted to a female classmate (Kaya Wilkins), Thelma experiences a series of unexplained seizures, causing her to realise that she may possess unusual abilities. From here, the story is dotted with chilling scenes (including a truly horrifying sequence on a frozen lake), all accompanied by a haunting score. The whole thing is frustratingly slow and drawn-out, but this is the kind of film that seeps under your skin, and there is no doubt that it is beautifully crafted.
