A home care nurse works with terminally ill patients.
In a career-reviving performance, Tim Roth is mesmeric in this bleak but audacious drama as David, a nurse who gives home care to three dying people throughout the course of the film. An enigmatic figure whose own backstory is only revealed in tiny increments, David takes pains to alleviate the suffering and meet the needs of his charges with empathy and respect for their wishes, even if that might mean crossing boundaries which upsets his patients' families. Composed mostly from long, static takes that simultaneously evoke the drudgery of care and witness the agony of the afflicted, it's a gruelling work in many respects, reminiscent in some ways of Michael Haneke's Amour but with even more art house austerity. Those willing to withstand the challenge will appreciate upcoming director Michel Franco's commitment to exploring mortality and palliative care, even if the shock ending seems unnecessary and strange.
