Coronation Street stalwart Ken Barlow (William Roache) has lied to the police and told them that his fall was an accident.

Viewers know that it was son Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) who attacked Ken and left him for dead at the foot of the stairs. And Ken’s son has already told investigating officers that he intends to make a full confession.

But scenes just broadcast saw Ken give a contradictory statement – his claim being that memories of that fateful night have only just returned and that he now recalls tripping and hitting his head on the bannister.

According to Ken’s new version of events, he argued with Adam (and not Daniel) on the evening in question and that this is how he ended up with bruises on his wrists. But the fall itself came not as the result of a shove but rather from a stumble.

DS MacKinnon (Sandra Huggett) now has to decide whether she believes Ken or Daniel, with interrogation scenes set to be shown in Friday’s episode.

However, storyline details already released for next week’s episodes reveal that Daniel is back on the Street and being dumped by Sinead, while Ken is convincing his attacker to burn evidence of the crime and move on. All of which suggests that the Barlows could well be complicit in covering up Daniel’s guilt…
