Episode 1: Christmas Special 2017

Summary

Boxing Day sees heavy snowfall covering the country and the adverse weather causes major disruption across Poplar as roads become blocked and pipes freeze meaning families have to queue outside for water from standpipes. Sister Julienne must inform a family about the death of their loved one and uncovers an uncomfortable truth, while Valerie helps an unmarried couple living in a caravan prepare for their baby, but unforeseen complications knock her confidence in her ability as a midwife. Guest starring Anita Dobson.

Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

It’s pantomime time again in Poplar, and the midwives and nuns of Nonnatus House are preparing for Jack and the Beanstalk. Though not Trixie and Christopher, who are going skiing in Switzerland.

But the weather puts the kibosh on everyone’s plans in what would become one of the worst winters on record. By Boxing Day there’s a blizzard and soon everyone is at the mercy of the onslaught.

Babies, though, must still be born, and just when you think everything feels a bit too jolly for a Call the Midwife Christmas special, brutal reality kicks in. Hard.

Newbie Valerie attends a birth in a chilly caravan, the child of an unhappy young Northern couple, while nice Dr Turner attends to a dear old soul, a man who’s burned his leg in an accident with a heater.
