Sports Personality of the Year 2019

Gabby Logan, Clare Balding and Gary Lineker present this year's ceremony live from P&J Live Arena in Aberdeen. Geraint Thomas was presented the prestigious main award in 2018, and the nominees this time around are cricketer Ben Stokes, sprinter Dina Asher-Smith, Formula One star Lewis Hamilton, heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Wales rugby union legend Alun Wyn Jones and Manchester City and England forward Raheem Sterling. The Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Lifetime Achievement, Overseas Sports Personality of the Year, Young Sports Personality of the Year, Unsung Hero and Helen Rollason awards will also be handed out, and there is live music from Lewis Capaldi and Emeli Sande.

An odd-numbered year means no Olympics or major men’s football tournament to provide a ready flow of sporting heroes, but 2019 had its moments. This year’s glitzy round-up, hosted in Aberdeen by Gary Lineker, Gabby Logan and Clare Balding, has the usual variety of trophies – including a team award for which England’s women footballers must be strong contenders – leading up to the main individual prize.

The six contenders there have earned their recognition. Lewis Hamilton won a sixth F1 world title, Dina Asher-Smith and Katarina Johnson-Thompson lit up a relatively muted World Athletics Championships with gold medals, Raheem Sterling’s off-pitch conduct was as impressive as his football achievements, and Alun Wyn Jones confirmed his legend status when Wales won another Six Nations grand slam.

The two most lasting memories of 2019, however, both revolved around one England cricketer: for winning the World Cup and one of the great Test matches of all time, Ben Stokes will surely top the big public vote.
