And while it was out of the blue from Nintendo, we first caught wind of Star Fox from known leaker, NateTheHate, who revealed the existence of ‘Star Fox 64 Reimagined for the Nintendo Switch 2, alongside a Zelda Ocarina of Time remake, which now seems a lot more likely in the wake of Star Fox having come to pass.

But, as for old-but-new-but-old Star Fox, read on!

When is the Star Fox release date?

The Star Fox release date is 25 June 2026.

This puts it on the same day as Dead or Alive 6 Last Round, but that game isn’t coming to Nintendo Switch 2, making it a fairly quiet release window for Star Fox, though you may still be playing through the Switch 2 release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which comes out earlier that month…

Can I pre-order Star Fox?

Yes, you can pre-order Star from the Nintendo eShop.

Star Fox will be released both digitally and physically, though a physical edition is not yet available for pre-order in the UK.

If you live in the United States, you can pre-order a physical copy from Amazon US.

Once physical copies are available for pre-order or purchase in the UK, we will update you.

Which consoles and platforms can play Star Fox?

Star Fox is only playable on Nintendo Switch 2.

You can play Star Fox on an original Nintendo Switch via GameShare, but this requires someone to own Star Fox on a Nintendo Switch 2 and be nearby, as it only works over local connections.

Being a first-party game from Nintendo, there is absolutely no hope of Star Fox coming to any other platforms.

Star Fox gameplay and story details

Star Fox is a remake of Star Fox 64, which was known as Lylat Wars in PAL territories such as the UK, an on-rails shooter taking place in the Lylat system, which has been expanded in the upcoming remake.

Players take control of mercenary pilot Fox McCloud, who, along with his team, has been tasked to defeat mad scientist Andross, who is wreaking havoc in the system.

There are multiple planets to explore in the Lylat System, which all feature different biomes, stages, and challenges.

You can replay each stage in challenge modes as well, offering additional replayability for those who like to earn every medal.

As well as piloting an Arwing, there are also ground combat stages where you drive a very manoeuvrable tank.

It’s not just a single-player game either, as Battle Mode introduces 4v4 dogfights between Team Star Fox and Team Star Wolf, with different modes to play from.

Also new are mouse controls, made possible by the Switch 2 Joy-Cons. There’s even a co-op mode that sees one player piloting the ship with one Joy-Con, and another player taking control of the weapons with the other.

You can also appear as Star Fox characters in GameChat, provided you have a webcam that supports it.

Is there a Star Fox trailer?

Nintendo broadcast a dedicated Star Fox Direct on 6 May 2026, which went into great detail about what to expect in the remake. Check it out above!

The actual Direct begins at 08:20, so be sure to skip ahead until then, if the video doesn’t already commence from there.

The trailer shows off the new visuals, game modes, expanded cutscenes and concludes with a prologue movie, featuring Fox’s dad, James McCloud.
